Big thaw…

Nice to get in so often over Christmas, hope you all managed to get some.

Sale starts on 4th January with 20% off everything, all the usual stock, no exceptions. Might even do free shipping if I can figure out how to apply that in the shopping cart, failing that a free bar of wax might be a better idea. Anyway bargains to be had and no vat increase at all in 2011. Got a feeling it going to be a tough old year so I think we all need a helping hand.

Keep calm and Slide on…

Not sure if I'll get to post a Blog before next week now, so whatever you are doing have a spiffy time and keep warm. Hope Santa brings you some nice stuff, if not there is always the sale next year.

Thanks for all the support this last year, amazing! You lot that is.
Had loads of amazing feedback and we have lots of exciting things in the pipe for next year so watch this space.

Here's to a Christmas Log… and…

Bude'iful Day

Had another great day at the Jumble yesterday, always a hoot.

Great to see Chris Nelson with his new book (Cold Water Souls) and Martin Dorey with his book (Camper Van Cookbook) both perfect Christmas presents for a friend, check them out, both lovely fellers also!

Big shout out to Shane (Tea Appreciation Society), John from Revolver, Rob from Slide 65, Rob from Royal, James Parry top chap, finally met up with CP (Adventures in Trim) and Lee, big thanks to Cai (Gul Bude) for organising it all… oh and all the great customers who came along and made it a blast, oh and a little message to the tea leaves who made off with some wax buddies and wax, shame on you, and there were some £100 Skip Frye fins sat next to the wax, doh! another career choice maybe?

Great crack and here's to the next one!

Gul Surf Jumble…

See you there…

Finally a few waves…

Not a massive pulse of swell, only lasted a few days on the North coast but very very welcome indeed after a few weeks of drought. Can't begin to describe the fun I had on a new board, grinning from ear to ear after three hours of frosty fun. Can't wait to get some bigger waves on the speed machine!

Don't forget it's the Gul Bude Surf Jumble this Saturday, if you need any fins just give us a shout, cheap and no delivery, see you there!

Winter

I'm sure you all know it's bloody cold, so I won't mention it…
But better mention Christmas now it's December, last posting dates for orders are below… that was painless.

A big thank you to everyone for your support this year, it's been amazing, hope everyone is enjoying their surfing and here's hoping 2011 is better still.

Lots of stock in for the Christmas rush so be sure to get your orders in by Monday 20th December for UK delivery and Monday 13th for Europe.

No more shop talk till 2011, here's hoping for some surf then!

Floods in Cornwall

We had some really bad flooding here yesterday, lots of people downriver had their houses flooded. Not good. I'm guessing a whole lot of crapola has been washed out to sea too, making surfing a bit perilous to your health. Fortunately there was no loss of life. All this was not helped by the de-forestation down the Glynn Valley, with little to soak up the deluge the new culvert on the A38 dumped 120 tonnes of slurry on the road closing it for the day. Trees, we should love 'em.

A Tuesday in November…

The 9th to be precise, kind of looks surfable maybe? Must have been blowing 30 knots, hard even to stand and take a picture. Next day was nearly still and a good'ish day for a surf, well not been in for so long it was bloody brilliant, good craic too. Looks pretty poor for the week ahead, at least I'll be free for a bit of F1 finalĂ©. Lewis Hamilton is 100-1 against at the minute, might be worth a punt…

A few new fins on the site this week, some Greenough's, including the Burl ones, a couple of Farberow and some new Norm's… and for those who are waiting the Nine Plus are on there way, promise.

November news…

I'd like to say there is a lot to report surfwise but alas October was pretty poor and November hasn't shown much quality as yet. Had a look around the South Coast today as the supposed pulse of large swell was supposed to hit, hadn't really got into any spots near us. Here's hoping that a few secret'ish spots might light up tomorrow (9th Nov) going to take the cameras out so watch this space.

Got a few fins about to go up on the site this week, including the 'burl' wood Greenoughs we have been waiting for since ages man. They are pretty damn cool so worth waiting for I'm guessing.

Get on thine prayer mats and pray to the good God Neptune for some clean lines. Amen.

It's officially cold…

Just for the record, boots were worn for the first time on 30th October, winter suit is out of mothballs and ready for action. For some reason I'm not looking forward to the cold even more this year, maybe it's the fourth terrible Summer in a row, anyway can't put off the inevitable, stiff upper lip and all that.

Pretty great waves for Halloween, but now looks pretty poor the the week or so ahead.

Last few days of sale…

Last few days of the stealth sale, 15% off everything until the end of the month, no more reminders, just get on it! Type 'swell' into the voucher box at checkout. Next sale will be January… maybe… possibly… or February depends on how things go, you know if we have a major rush before Christmas, might be Feb, we'll let you know, over and out.

Lil' Piggy

Have been super lucky to have the loan of a Michel Junod Pignar (much thanks Mr I). I was quietly sceptical when I pulled it out of the bag, although it is decorated with some awe inspiring art by T Moe, it seemed pretty old school in terms of it's shaping. Now I'm no brilliant snake hipped, surf stylist but I was pleasantly surprised how *user friendly it was, only tried it in knee high snappers so far but paddles really well, catches waves so easily and turns great, stable and holds with a big old D. All contrary to what I had expected on first impression, Michel knows his onions, no doubt about that.

Need a few more sessions to get a better idea in some bigger stuff, hell, who knows I might even get near the nose :)

I wish boards weren't so bloody tempting… get under your skin they do, might have to get myself one from Michel, better start saving.

*Sorry couldn't think of a more 'rad' expression, pitiful I know.

Half term hoardes

Seems to get busier and busier during half term in October, nearly as crowded as August bank holiday, in the water at least. Great to see so many people having fun in the water, no really it is.

October wave count has been disappointing so far, makes September seem epic. Let's hope we have some more fun ones soon.

Gul Viper Boots…

The main reason for a trip to Gul was to pick up some new booties, great looking product I have to say, let's see how they perform over the winter. Signs look good, I recon we should support our local business's in these tough times, not through charity but because they do produce some great gear. Their new suits look the business too.

Fluid Juice…

Had a nosey around the Gul HQ foyer this morning, some real slices of UK surf history in there. Love this Fluid Juice board and particularly the graphics, remind me of the back of my maths book circa 1978.
Simpler times, and no worse for it. Pop in if you are in the Bodmin area, sure they won't mind.

Lost wave syndrome…

Do you ever think about all those no so quite perfect waves you let roll past waiting for something with a better shape or breaking a particular way? Well I'm finding myself doing that a lot this past week, if only I could rewind and ride a few, I'd be happy to ride a few less than perfect ones right about now, seriously I would…

Come on, let's have some WAVES please. :)

Wednesday, 13 October 2010

Wasn't September great…

This was the 3rd September at Polzeath, come on October more of the same please…

Glynn Valley

Not sure how many of you guys travel the A38 to get to the breaks of Cornwall, but you might start to notice that the Glynn Valley (From Dobwalls to Bodmin) is changing. The sad fact is one of the prettiest Valleys in the South West is being devastated by a tree disease called Phytophthora Ramorum, the forestry plantations are all being felled as the disease spreads, and soon there will be very little wood left.

Obviously the main softwood plantations are a crop and would be felled sooner or later, but that usually happens slowly with a programme of re-planting. Now everything has to go and nothing will be replanted anytime soon. The disease is also spreading into the native species and killing them.

The effect on the valley is horrendous, both aesthetically and environmentally, hard to tell as yet how it will affect the Fowey and all the wildlife. Sad times.

The even more worrying thing is that this disease is spreading up country through Devon and into Somerset, could be worse than Dutch Elm in many ways.

So say a prayer when you are driving up the Valley.

More info on the Disease

Autumn

We have been having some amazing weather this week, almost better than the so called Summer, mind you that wouldn't be that difficult would it. A great weekend of surf was had and looks like a pulse of swell Thursday followed by a big nothing… oh well.

Don't forget 15% off everything this month, just type 'swell' into the coupon box at checkout, and yes I am seeing the irony of choosing that code.

Still amazed at the quality of the iPhone images having looked back at the Satio ones, who needs a P&S?, okay so not much cop when you use the zoom but as a walk around it's pretty perfect, just wish old Jobs'worth would unlock the ability to send files via Bluetooth.

ETL, ELT? Whatever it's called…

Went down to Watergate yesterday to watch the European Longboard Tour, some great skills on show for sure (if you could see that is). I always wonder however who these events are for, there never seem to be that many spectators, people on the beach or in the sea are often oblivious, I guess it's all about the sponsors getting their guys in the mags.

Good fun though and nice to bump into a few old friends.

Sorry didn't look at the results… ;)

Gimme some skin dawg…

Hmmm excuse the awful pun, seemed hilarious at the time, honest.

Getting all creative…

Doing a little something for a new project, all will be revealed in the fullness… something a bit colourful for a dull day.

Was that all it was…

To quote Jean Carne… seems SoCal are having a 100+ heatwave after a pretty dire Summer and ours seems to be well and truly over. Feeling a bit cheated here. Wet, cold and dire.

Captain Fin Company new stuff just in…

Hot new fins from Captain Fin Company just in from California, get them soon before they go, very limited quantities, no really, only a few of each, gonna fly.

Skip Frye Gephart Glass on's

Managed to get hold of some more 125mm Skip Frye Gephart tri fins this week. Very hard to get hold of.
Perfect for any tri fin or maybe a Fish Simmons. £95 for a set, first come first served, email me for details. Bloody lovely they are.

Lefts

I'd rather go right myself but this overhead beauty went unridden whilst I watched. Peeling barrelling magnificence…

Greenough 4A

Old George knew his onions when he designed the 4A, has to be one of the best and most popular fins of all time amongst the fin cognocenti, if you are a bit unsure of what fin to go for then this could be it, the fin that all others are measured against. Greeeeen O!

(Not sure what the 1A, 2A or 3A were like but the 4A rocks)

(Edit: thought this post seemed familiar, said the self same thing in November, must be true then)

Friends…

Nothing better than a bit of swell, sunny days and a bit of banter in the lineup. We seem to have missed out on the sunshine bit again this year but at least we still have our mates. Not looking forward to the earplugged up gimp mask days of freezing waves. Wish I had a few more Summer memories from this year to tide me through…

Wax Buddies just in…

These are great, the only wax comb tool thingumy you will ever need. Recycled plastic to boot.
We also have new Matunas Warm Water wax in for all of you jetting off to Maroc, or like me use a slighter harder compound. Oh and Matunas new air fresheners for anyone with a dog or slightly wiffy wetsuit, also like me.

One year on…

…well almost, we have been going 15 months now, how times flies, don't quite know how we forgot to celebrate our first anniversary but we did.

Anyway how about a few giveaways to celebrate?

First 5 people to answer the following question will get a goodie bag of stuff in the post.

Q. Which legend or surfing celebrated his 69th Birthday this week?

A. Email to info@finshack.com, don't forget to include your name and address, good luck!

Been a great five days…

Thank you King Neptune and Danielle, much appreciated. Must have been 150+ people in at 7am on Saturday, but this morning was quiet and still some 2ft+ sets coming through, and not a SUP to be seen and no obstacles on the inside ;) blissed out and tired and ready for some more.

This is the kind of view…

I like when I'm arriving at the beach, admittedly I took this as I was leaving but you get the idea. Why was I leaving? Too tired to lift a tea cup after 6 hours logging in a day…

Thursday, 2 September 2010

Sets!

Some great waves this morning at Polzeath, clean and glassy at 7am. More of the same if not bigger to come. Bloody great!

Liquid Salt

Super delighted that a few of my photographs have appeared on Liquid Salt, check it out for some great articles and the odd nice image ;) Made my year for sure especially as one of them was of Skip Frye, a real pleasure and honour to meet and watch surf. Of course we sell a few of his fine fins too, but that's another story :)

Teez

Super stoked we have finally got our new T's in the warehouse, just in time for 'Summer' :)
Hopefully get them up on the site by the end of the week if I can get my head around the complex html.
They are a great organic Tee with discharge print (I know sounds delightful) giving that soft vintage feel. Put one on and they feel like your favourite shirt straight away.

PeeZee

Desperate attempt at a surf day yesterday, managed to get in for some crumbly super short period wind swell wobblers. Nice to get wet at least. Wondering what the Autumn will hold…

Oh and finally managed to get rid of the Shatio Sony Ericsson, which has to be the worst phone in history, got myself a iPhone finally. Will be selling the Satio on eBay shortly ;)

Sacred Craft…

It's Sacred Craft in San Diego this weekend, not able to go this time which is a massive shame, here's a few pics of things we're missing…

Wednesday, 4 August 2010

New stock…

Some new stock from the good men at Nine Plus fresh on the site this morning as well as some new finnage in the sale room. T Shirts on their way as we speak and some other exciting stuff coming as well… all ready for those early Autumn barmy days and swells.

Plugged!

Had a good laugh watching people getting fitted for their 'plugs' today. Most strange feeling being syringed with that green stuff. Quick and painless though and the surfplugs will be ready in a week or so. Thanks again to Rob from surfplugs for coming down, hopefully save a few people from surfers ear.

Saturday, 31 July 2010

Fin tidy

Made myself a 'fin tidy' this morning, bit of reclaimed hardwood, power plane and router, hours work, job done. Should be good for a 'point of sale' device for the surfplug day tomorrow too. Just need to replace my fins with some bargains for the morning now… see you there!

Friday, 30 July 2010

Surfplug day **Update**

Rob is coming still even though we don't have loads of people  (what a good sort he is) So see you there between 10 and 2. Sorry for all the confusion!

I'll bring along some fins and stuff, Steve will be serving up Bacon rolls and tea, what more could you ask!

Tuesday, 27 July 2010

Surfplug day

It's coming keep 1st August free!

Monday, 26 July 2010

Crowds

There's always somewhere you can go if the crowds bother you, personally as long as the sun is shining and there are waves then I'm happy. I'm all for making everyone's holiday a good one, as our good friend Chris says 'Happy waves'.

Wednesday, 21 July 2010

Tees

T's off to the printers today, very excited, should be in the shop in about three weeks. Just in time for the 'Summer'. Already sold a few on pre-order, thanks Mum. We should have new fins and T's from Captain Fin as well as. Roll on August!

Friday, 16 July 2010

Summer?

This was Wednesday before that storm hit, was starting to build, just remind yourselves it's mid-July. Now it's Friday and still messed up and not so good. Lots of trees down from the wind last night. Hopefully it will clean up and the sun come out, nice to dream! :)

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Magic Seaweed anyone?

Steve made an amazing Seaweed and Cheese pancake from Sophie's foraged seaweed yesterday. The kelp 'tortilla' chips were ace too. Not for sale as yet, but you never know, Padstein eat your heart out!

no surf

Couldn't find a wave, walked the dog, found this. Does life get much better?

D Fin

As part of the new 'I'm losing my mind I keep seeing surf related stuff everywhere' thread, here's a well solid D Fin perfectly formed and proof the Fred and Wilma did surf.
