Mikey de Temple MD3

As well as being one of the East coast of the United States best Longboarders Mikey is a film maker and all round surf guru. This fin developed for Rainbow is one of the best all round fins you can get. Obvious inspiration from the Greenough 4A, a bit more base and slightly less stiff for a bit more snap it will send you into trim heaven.

See what Mikey is all about in his films Picaresque and Sight | Sound, two of the best contemporary surf films out there, or check his blog here: http://www.highseasfilm.com/blog/

Toxic surfers…

Surfing as a destroyer of the environment?

There's not really a day goes by when I don't come across a article or blog post about how toxic we are as surfers.
Too much resin, fibre glass horror stories, surfing air miles or the 700 barrels of oil it takes to make one bootie… it's pretty relentless.

It's easy to see why though, as a surfer we have a very intimate relationship to our sporting arena, and it's all too easy to see the damage that is and could be done to it and the surrounding environment, no surprise we are 'conscious' in every sense of the word.

Maybe it's our guilt that we are having such a fucking great time there must be something to pay, some downside, somewhere?

Surfing IS awesome and yes some of it's by products are toxic but should we beat ourselves up too badly?

maybe…

We as a bunch are probably one of the most forward thinking consumers in the world, we are actually affecting the way producers produce. Wooden boards, recycled materials, pressure groups… the list goes on. Just think of Patagonia, Surfers Against Sewage, Surfers Path and you get the impression how surf related businesses try to be as aware and as green as possible.

Comparable sports compared to these high standards have a woeful reputation…

Not picking on any particular sport as we all cross pollinate, but what exactly is the impact of the amount of concrete in Wembley Stadium or water consumed by any 18 holes or the F1 circus jetting around the globe, compared to you and I and our surf equipment? Non of it is great admittedly but our record is pretty good I'd say.

Footballers against Concrete
Golfers against Water Wastage
FI Drivers against Air Miles

Still waiting for these… :)

We still have loads to do… but surf and feel good…

Dogtober

Nothing better than going for a post surf walk with the dog on the beach… seems to have been extra long ban this year, someone was chuffed to bits.

So some actual lumpy bumpy surf was had today, more on the horizon and the Jesus Longboard event at Polzeath seems to have conjured up a nice forecast for the weekend, how do they do that?

Lots of new fins on the website in time for the alleged 'swell' season that is October…

Hopefully we all get some… fingers, toes, legs etc…

Where did the Summer go?

Seems it flew by without even saying 'hi'… severe lack of sunshine blighted us here in the South West and what with a lack of waves too there has been a lot of talk of moving to the sunshine… Portugal anyone?

Summer did have it's benefits though, great to see the Bing crew at various events round the County, Matt even entered James's Hip Wigglers (lot's of pics on Facebook) when the sun shone for once.

Last weekend was the European Fish Fry, great event if you missed it, too many friends old and new to get around, boards a plenty, and sounds like some sore heads from the evening… roll on next year!

Back to the chills of Autumn now, hopefully some nice lined up swell too, fingers crossed.

Oh and lot's of new shiz on the website…

Happy Waves!

Post No Post

Two weeks is a long time with no phone or internet connection… all I'll say is BT you suck, took the guy 10 minutes to fix it, but you wouldn't send him for two weeks.

Anyway, managed to snag a few waves Sunday morning in the moonlight. Only two of us out at five.

There will be a bunch of new fins on the site later this week, would have been sooner if not for the enforced hiatus from the internet. Some sweet numbers from Rainbow, Nine Plus and new kids on the block, Beyond.

All good.

Pic of the Day 12.7.12

Couple of feet of pushing high windswell.
Sums up the last few months.
Roll on October…

Pic of the Day 3.7.12

Summer still hasn't arrived but a week of swell looked like materialising.
Tuesdays surf was supposed to be first of a pretty good week.
Had a great little session, none busy and a fun wave.
Twisted my knee on the last wave kick out, then did my back in folding up a cardboard box for recycling the next day, missed all the clean lined up swell of the rest of the week.
Now I'm fine it's gone flat and it's pissing down.
Joy…

In other slightly more fun news there is a free T shirt with every order over £40 in July and it's the Vintage Surfboard do at Lusty Glaze this Saturday.
Unbridled Joy!…

I see waves!
Some lovely peelers on this Novem… sorry June day.
Nice to see the Polzeath crew out in force.
More.

In other news lot's of new Rainbow fins just arrived, should be on the site early next week.
Plenty on the way from Nine Plus as well, some US stuff in the pipe too.
Keep them peeled.

Pic of the Day 20.6.12

International Surfing Day 2012
Yup you guessed it, flat, wet and cold…
Nothing much on the horizon either.

Pic of the Day 13.6.12

Couple of days of Dawnies, shoulder high reeling peaks were the order of the day.
Made the most of it as it looks flat on the horizon!

Pic of the Day 23.5.12

Can't even remember when I last surfed waves of this size it's been so crap for so long…
Solid 4ft, maybe even head high on some of the bigger sets… bit rusty but great fun.
Hopefully more tomorrow, sure to have faded a bit, don't even care the rest of the country seem to be basking in a heatwave and it's grey here…

Monday, 21 May 2012

Pic of the Day 19.5.12

Spent 3 hours paddling from one 1ft peak to another… good for the old shoulders I guess.
Trying to shoot whilst surfing is another skill on the 'must do' list…

Cracking day of fun surf today… worth the wait!
No boots, hooray!

Pic of the Day 13.5.12

What gives, one surf in a month, that has to be some kind of cruel record?
Maybe this week has something in store?

Walked up to the top of El Bray at the weekend, awesome view of a fickle mistress, how I miss her.
Perfect day for a walk…

Shop Closed

The online shop will be un-manned from 5-12th May.
You will still be able to order but your purchase will not ship until Monday 13th May.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Pic of the Day 27.4.12

Managed to sneak away from my desk after 16 days straight without a break and mostly 12 hour days.
Wasn't really expecting much from the short period wind swell but had an absolute blast with only me and another guy out. Mr Surfy joined us later and was one of the best surfs I'd had in weeks, even in the crumble.
Just as well as it's been flat or stormy since.

Monday, 16 April 2012

Pic of the Day 14.4.12

Few small fun Sunday ones… really cold again, but sunny at least.
Bit of a stormy week ahead, just as well got loads on… back soon!

Saturday, 14 April 2012

Pic of the Day 14.4.12

Couple of unexpectedly good surfs yesterday and today. Only a couple of feet but fun and none too busy, which considering it's the last week of the Easter holidays is pretty rare. Drove home in a freezing sleet storm which may in part go some way to explaining why nobody was about.

My daughter joined me for the first time and had first hand experience of the testosterone fuelled chat at Mr Surfy's pancake van after my session. Not sure if she's coming again… but don't let that put you off though, great craic and best pancakes anywhere in Cornwall. Steve's young apprentice 'Johnny' is back off up country, if you don't like sugar on your cheese pancakes now's the time for a visit.

joie de vivre

In California you can park for free at many breaks in dedicated Surf Parks, you can even light a BBQ in a State provided BBQ pit. Have a shower and answer the call of nature.

In France you can park for free and get a shower at many many beaches.

In the Cornwall you have to pay through the nose, no part day parking at some beaches, or even be banned from parking at all if you have a Camper, no shower, no BBQ…

Where's the joy of life Cornwall County Council?

Pic of the Day 31.3.12

Last weeks sunny paddle outs…
Seems the weather has returned to the usual chilly and grey we are used to.
So long sunshine.

Last of the Swell…

Fin…

The End

Pic of the Day 29.3.12

Chris and Bex hitting the last of the March swell on a truly beautiful day…

Pic of the Day March 2012

The latter half of March has been spectacular here in Cornwall.
Amazing weather coupled with lovely waves…
Surfed pretty much every day on everything from thigh glass to overhead reeling thumpers, classic.

Thursday, 15 March 2012

Pic of the Day 15.3.12

One of those days the image looked better than reality, still a few nice ones although tide was a bit too full. Stoked to surf with good pals Dom and Gary. Only one other out which was odd.

Pic of the Day 14.3.12

Some head high glass, two of the best waves of the Winter, sunshine too.
Perfection.

Tuesday, 13 March 2012

Pic of the Day 13.3.12

Swell was dropping off but some nice small glassy peelers.
Still quiet, almost started thinking of a Summer suit when I saw a girl on the inside in a shortie, madness!

Monday, 12 March 2012

Pic of the Day 12.3.12

Most of the Shire was bathed in Spring sunshine but the beach was foggy and cold.
There was a thigh high glassy wave though, super fun quiet three hour surf.
Porpoise swimming amongst the quiet line up which was magical.
Stark contrast to Saturday which was bigger and a swirling maelstrom of Spring tide nastiness.
More tomorrow hopefully.

Tuesday, 6 March 2012

Pic of the Day 6.3.12

Surf had promise today, but alas the reality was a crumbly cross shore mess. Can't say an old school Nuuhiwa was the best choice either. Charts for later in the week look epic for some sheltered spots that need some juice, fingers crossed.

Pic of the Day 2.3.12

South Coast was peeling but no board with me… daughter refused to sit in the car for two hours waiting, bloody inconsiderate if you ask me. ;)
Still cold in that offshore though.

Monday, 20 February 2012

Pic of the Day 20.2.2012

Arrived at beach to clean conditions, slight offshore, almost glassy 2ft. Perfect.

Got changed, walked down cliff and classic wind switch to brisk cross shore. Buggered.

Heigh Ho…

Pulse of swell mid/end of week, maybe a south coastie?

Friday, 17 February 2012

New stock…

Loads of new finnage on the site from Gul, Del Norte, Rainbow and the George of Greenough.
Get on them now before they go quick, sure to be a new swell coming soon. Hopefully.

Friday, 10 February 2012

Just in…

Some rather splendid new fins from UK company Del Norte. Priced to sell but outstanding quality to match the finest, they should be a great addition to anyone's fin quiver.

Also fresh in are Allen key fin bolts, use your fin key to tighten, such a good idea can't believe no one thought of it before…

That is all.

Thursday, 9 February 2012

Pic of the Day 8.2.12

Another fun but smaller day…

Cold again, -7ºc in the car park apparently… did have some ice on my board so maybe it was, or perhaps we have just got used to it, think that was in the shade though.

More waves coming.

Wednesday, 8 February 2012

Pic of the Day 7.2.12

Sweepers out in force in and out of the water, almost outnumbered the surfers.
Sign of things to come?
:(

Fun slide though despite the greedy ones…

Monday, 6 February 2012

Pic of the Day 3.2.12

Great surf at Watergate, frigidly cold but fun, day later warmer but raggedy and rippy at PZ not great.

Should have some new fins and bolts on the site this week all being well.

Some great stuff should be on it's way from the US of A soon.

Thursday, 2 February 2012

Pic of the Day 2.2.12

Could it have been any colder… full rubber no mistake, fun wave though.

Wednesday, 1 February 2012

Pic of the Day 31.1.12

Slowly getting used to shooting with a P&S, bit hit and miss, but getting there…
Last day of January and Winter seems to have started with a vengeance.
Super cold but fun 2ft PZ.

Tuesday, 31 January 2012

Pic of Day 30.1.12 (encore encore)

The majesty of a Cornish winter… gnarly gnar

Monday, 30 January 2012

Pic of the Day (encore) 30.1.12

Ploop

Pic of the Day 30.1.12

Some chunk in the wind today, quiet considering.

In other news there are some ace new Rainbow fins on the site, 'dipped' Pivots look impressive to me at least.
